Many great accomplishments come from the play between order and chaos.
In september 1928 a series of chance incidents within the highly controlled conditions of a hospital laboratory led to the discovery of penicillin by Alexander Fleming and the saving of an estimated 100 million lives.
Within the field of the arts, in the 1950s and 60s composers such as John Cage and Terry Riley changed the rules of conventional music composition and performance by combining precise and specific scores with elements of indeterminacy and randomness.

Music is essentially about both rules (pitch, timbre, tempo, genre) and freedom (creativity, uncertainty, chance, the unexpected).
Make something that addresses this paradox. Your creation should use one or more #MusicBrick, or have the potential itself to become a #MusicBrick in the future.

Prize

Winning #MusicBricks hack teams will be given long term support and assistance to develop their projects further by the #MusicBricks partners. If you’re willing to further develop your project idea and get involved in the #MusicBricks incubation programme you need to apply by filling out this form (http://bit.ly/musicbricksaward).
#MusicBricks is a collaboration between Stromatolite, Sigma-Orionis, Ircam-Centre Pompidou, Music Technology Group, Vienna University of Technology, and Fraunhofer IDMT

Challenge

Title: To create an interface/visualization/experience around tags extracted from lyrics and audio.

Description

  • Musixmatch has a very large lyrics database and we would like to analyze/interact with/visualize various slices (artist discographies/charts/genres) of our databases in interesting ways. We think working with tags extracted from the lyrics and audio of these slices could be one way forward.
  • One experimental endpoint to extract tags from lyrics which could be used as the input.
  • The audio tags (energy, valence, arousal, liveness, etc) can be obtained from the echonest api, this could be another input.
Example: Visualization of country charts using lyrics tags: http://ec2-54-147-191-254.compute-1.amazonaws.com/nishant_tag_representation/

Challenge

In our research we are dealing with patients who present very limited communication options. Something as simple as transmitting their emotional state could be a life changing event for them and their families. What if we could do this music? Our challenge is to develop an application able to translate subjects emotional state into music or music playing events.
Direct communication through brain waves is an important challenge with enormous consequences for human beings in both healthy and ill state. The so called sonification of mind and body signals can be applied by patients with temporal or chronic communication difficulties, or with a therapeutic or entertainment purpose. We would like you to develop the next generation of EEG/ECG-based systems for emotional communication in real time. We provide different platforms for either creating music or modifying the parameters of currently played tracks out of the incoming physiological streams.
